Enjoying retirement
In The Red Rose County
Quite often I devise a route from looking at the OS maps on my phone. This was one such, and a terrific one at that. We started off at Higher Hodder bridge with its closed pub overlooking the river, now a rather nice series of houses. The sun shone on the river all along our route. One feature was the numerous feeder streams we crossed with appropriately rustic bridges. Another feature reminding me just a little of the cornish Coastal path was the up and down nature of the route. Round about here we saw two fishermen chatting away on a bench on the opposite side of the river. They looked very much as though they were discussing which flies to use today. Grayling , Brown Trout, Sea Trout and Salmon are all caught. As we climbedsteeply out of the woods we came unexpectedly across this cross......the plaque has been ripped off at some time but apparently a memorial to a young man who died in the river below. The walk back was a little more unspectacular but pleasant enough with Pendle always as usual on the horizon. And the houses and cottages in the village of Chaigley were lovely.

We parked in the pretty village of Hurst Green on Easter Sunday and it was incredibly busy....we only just scraped a parking spot, and seemingly everyone was walking the same route as us. We were in open country in 2 minutes...you can see the ever-present Pendle on the horizon.... And the countryside was beautifully varied. Eventually we entered Stonyhurst's grounds via their impressive observatory. and we were able to walk along the full frontage of the ancient college... and since no-one was about we walked down the grand front entrance road with its formal lakes... On the way back we strolled around the cricket pitch with its lonely pavilion.. and ended at the Shireburn Arms in Hurst Green which we really look forward to visiting when pubs open up once more....Beautiful day, beautiful walk.
We can drive to Clitheroe Sculpture Park in 5 minutes or if we really feel like it walk there in 15 minutes....morning, afternoon or evening.....in all weathers.....today sun and snow. Just over 6000 steps...... We always walk down the road at the end of the park and go onto the river path....a lovely walk with a bench half way!
