Enjoying retirement
In The Red Rose County
We'd noticed a concessionary path on the north side of the Ribble at Eddisford Bridge, so we decided to investigate.......the May at this time of year is incredible... .....and the first part of the walk along the river bank was great.. It was about an hour to Mitford, blue skies all the way....and when we reached Mitford its medieval church, one of the finest parish churches in the north of England apparently, appeared through the trees... and next door was Miton Hall with its own very nice signboard... and everything you could wish for.......a well, dovecote, mounting steps, very impressive stone dogs, deceptive in size as we could see from the other side of the river, it is actually four stories high at the back We would really have liked to call in The Aspinall Arms for a drink, but it being Bank Holiday Weekend, and covid restrictions still in place, there was a queue to get in.... We walked back to Clitheroe along the South bank, just as delightful.... and there were one or two hopeful fishermen along the way, this chap wading and casting a dry fly for salmon or trout..... back at Eddisford Bridge the queues for ice cream were long!

with its dramatic listed bus station... an incomparable Georgian square with beautiful central gardens..... surrounded by original and modern buildings fitting to the setting..... and one of the most beautiful parks you could hope to see....... with a promenade by the river..... imposing trees everywhere... wide-open spaces...... a really lovely Japanese garden....... another beautiful park next door...... impressive buildings and streetscapes.... and a decent M+S.... here's a clue....... It's PROUD PRESTON of course! We came to look around The Harris Museum and Gallery, and very impressive it was too........ from the space where we had our quick coffee and snack.... to the proud evocation of Preston's past.... a glorious mix of sculptures space artefacts striking paintings modern art objets d'art local heroes.....here Tom Finney of course and fascinating explanations of Preston's industrial history which wouldn't be complete without a large section on Horrockses one of the most famous names in cotton (and where my Mum worked for a while) It was interesting to end with a quote from Marx whose affinity with Preston matches that of Engels with Manchester.......
