Enjoying retirement
In The Red Rose County
We borrowed this hardback book, which we had both read before, when we were up at my daughter's in Edinburgh. F read it first and enjoyed it, so I was looking forward to my read. It was one of those books which start off being my bedside reading, but develop quickly into one I can't put down. Interest was grabbed at the beginning and thereafter never let up. In fact I find it incredible that over the years there have been a number of bad reviews, one New Zealand critic calling it boring. Really? What do they read in New Zealand? Basically the story revolves around the Wopuld family which built its fortune on a board game, which then developed into a super popular computer game. Success is such that an American company want to take over the firm, and the family meets at their Scottish mansion to discuss what to do. It is also the story of the main character Alban, a renegade family member, his life and loves. His true love...a cousin. And a more realistic love a punk mathematician from Glasgow. His whole history forces him back into the bosom of the family from his alternative life. Secrets are revealed, family quarrels resurrected, and love, and sex, make their impressions. Banks is such a quality writer that you really do become deeply involved in what happens to the individual family members and of course the company. Boring? I think not.
